New Mayor of Malmesbury

At the traditional Mayor Making ceremony in the Town Hall on May 13th, Councillor Charles Vernon was elected Mayor of Malmesbury for 2003/4. He replaces Councillor John Bowen who had held the post for two years. Councillor Patrick Goldstone was elected Deputy Mayor.

In his acceptance speech Councillor Vernon explained that he and his wife, Valerie, had only moved to the town in 1996, but after a week's holiday had been so attracted to the place that they were determined to make it their home. He outlined his hopes for his mayoral year and announced that his nominated charities would be Burton Hill School and facilities for youth in the town. He also announced that Churches Together in Malmesbury would undertake the role of Chaplain.

Councillor Goldstone also addressed the meeting stating how much he looked forward to working with Councillor Vernon, and outlining what he saw as the role of Deputy Mayor.

After this a vote of thanks was passed to the retiring mayor, to which Councillor Bowen replied with a speech of thanks to all who had supported him throughout his two years in office, particularly his family.

Councillor Vernon then issued a general invitation to attend the Mayoral Service in the Abbey on June 1st at 3:00pm.
